The Monks - We Do Wie Du (1966)

Originally known as The 5 Torquays in 1964, this group of American GIs was stationed in Germany in the mid-60s. By the time they were discharged, they decided to stay in Germany, to continue as a band, and had changed their music and appearance to be “anti-Beatles,” involving black robes, nooses around their necks, and even short hair with tonsures.

This song comes from the group’s only album, Black Monk Time, released in 1966. They were able to get away with edgier lyrics, in comparison to the US and UK, by having the album created in Germany, where the people helping to create it couldn’t understand what they were saying. With no artistic restraints, they were free to say what they pleased!

Lyrics:

Hey, hey, what are you gonna say?
You know, well, we're gonna make love today
Yay, yay, yay, yay, yay

We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du
We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du
We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du

Yea, we’ll do it any old way

We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du

Won't you come with me today?
We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du

Woah, yea
We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du
Mmmm, yea yea

We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du

Hey girl, I'm gonna stay today
We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du

And there's nothing
Nothing you can say
We do as you, we do
We do, wie du, wie du
